What could I use a Wireless Network at VUW for?
A Wireless Network at VUW would allow you to use your laptop on campus to access Blackboard and the other VUW websites, your files and email on the VUW Student Computer Services, and the Internet. You wouldn't need to locate a free network port to plug your laptop into - you'd just need to be in an area on campus within range of an Access Point.
As the network would be operated by VUW, you wouldn't incur any connection fees, per-minute or traffic charges for using it; only the normal SCS fees for printing and Internet access would apply.
In order to access a wireless network, you'd need a laptop that was wireless network compatible. Most new models are, or have wireless network capability (often referred to as "WLAN", "WiFi" or "802.11a/b/g") as an optional extra. Add-ons for older models can be purchased for less than $100.
Comments:
Note that the above is somewhat student-centric - I have no idea what sort of services staff would be able to use. I think "All of the, via a VPN" was the plan when I last heard about stuff from ITS, though. --DonaldGordon
