Press Release

I have already submitted to Salient], our a4 graphic for publication in this weeks edition, as well as VicNews/Events. I have e-mailed the Leader of the Christchurch], asked to approve a press release to computer world. I will post this once confirmed. May also like to do the same with, various regional publications such as Capital times, and the Wellingtonian, if you know of someone or somthing who can publicize the event... Just do it.

Artwork

As you can see from the above banner, I have created some banner style artwork. The original format is an OpenDocument format drawing. OpenDocument] Fullsize] PDF]

It's designed to be printed at 300dpi on 3xa3 sheets. (Landscape)

There is an SFD artwork page here, feel free to add some stuff, I have some more artwork I did for the IOpenCD for clubs day I may add it but it wasn't much. http://maitri.ubuntu.com/softwarefreedomday/wiki/index.php/Artwork

Flyer

I have moved the flyer info to a seperate], as this one was getting hard to navigate. Can the people doing this please format this into a nice printable PDF (2up a4 or 3up a4, with nice cover and artwork ;-), and link it here. Also more NZ relevant usage of FOSS would be good to include. Brent Wood has a lot of information about FOSS GIS that he is involved in. Talking to him via the NZOSS list might be a good idea.

We have a Wiki page with the SFD organisers. We are expected to write a short report of what we did, and take some photos of ourselves doing our thing. it is at http://maitri.ubuntu.com/softwarefreedomday/wiki/index.php/Wellington. Feel free to add stuff to it. Can I please get people to bring digital cameras to any events/gatherings from here till after the event please, to take pics.

SFD 10th CBD (Held)

Went well, we had a presense Outside of Dymocks Bookstore on Lambton Quay, and Outside of Dick Smtih Electronics in Manners Mall. Lots of interested people. Brent has written up the following summary;

In addition to the SFD stands at Victoria University on Friday, we had stands at Dymocks bookshop and DSE Manners Mall on Sat AM.

I picked up about 100 of the 200 CD's from Joel on Wed. On Thursday I drafted a flyer to go with them, with one side on SFD05 and the other about the upcoming Wellington Linux Installfest being run by wellylug. This is available on the wellylug website at:

I met with Joel on Sat AM and we took about half the balloons/flyers/CDs each. He was at DSE & I was at Dymocks. Some interest, occasional enthusiasm (in one case from a parent used to buying software for their kids) & no trouble chatting about OS concepts with passers by, and giving away the disks & balloons.

Using the OpenCD as a giveaway provide a great point of interest to introduce and briefly explain Open Source concepts to a wide range of people who have never really heard of it, certainly never thought much about it.

If the event is run again next year, hopefully we can provide more support for SFD with more and larger teams throughout NZ.

Brent Wood

Brent Wood, has arranged to also have a presense at Dymocks, and Has 100 Open CD's and is doing up a Flyer. If you can help out Saturday please let me Know Asap.

SFD 9th on Campus (Held)

We have a Desk in the Quad Tomorrow, I will arrange to pick it up and set it up in the Morning. If I can get someone to Turn up earlish to help me cart stuff from my office to the Quad and Pick up the Desk would be Great, also to get Ballons blown up. I will be in my Office early, so if you show up there (Cotton 243) sometime around 9 would be good. The Following People have confirmed they will be there for the following times (alter if these are wrong): Andrew W :1000-1200 Konstantyn D:1200-1300 (More people around 1200-1300 would be good this is peak time) A few others have said they have time free in the afternoon. We especially need people with Laptops to be there to Demo stuff, We have made up goodie packs, and I will be wandering around the vacinity most of the day, I am not able to be there 12-1300 so this is a time we need lots of people there. I intend to wander down to rutherford house in the afternoon, and Distribute goodie packs. If someone can buy some more lolies that would be good. I will get a few more Flyers Printed off aswell. It may also be a good idea to Wanderaround a few of the Faculty offices and Maybe ITS with Goodie Packs to give out. Also if anyone has SoftToys of the Tux variety they would be good to put on the desk. Colour is Good. I have one or two posters and the Banner I printed but in my Experience Softtoys are great.

Steering Meeting (Held)

This was held, and we Received Supplies from Australia (Thanks to Pia Waugh) while not quite the Haul we promised it saved us having to duplicate our own. We have made up goodie Packes, with lolie pops and a flyer along with cds. Thanks to everyone who attended. Half the CD's were distributed to the NZOSS rep (Cheers Brent).

The meeting is held in the Cotton Club (Cotton Building, CO339), there is a parking lot outside, and you take the first flight of stairs (or the lift) to the third floor.

For those of you not aware you can order Pizza (not free) for the event from the interface.org.nz] (just follow the previous orders format)

Please bring friends and acquaintances to that Wednesday evening who might want to help out do stuff on the Saturday event. Normally we start at 1800 (that's 6pm), Pizza orders must be in by 1545.

Currently the Helium balloon idea is scrapped, as we have only got the supplemental materials (some 25 balloons, some tattoo's, a badge and t-shirt). Interface.org has a Version of the OpenCD and we can duplicate copies on the Wednesday, as well as a swag of Kubuntu CDs, anyone with other distros and CDs please bring them along to Wednesday's meeting so that we can do some rough calculations. I will get the Balloons we have Helium filled from the Chem Department. If everything turns up by tomorrow (Monday), great, but I'm not going to count on it. Also after discussion with someone in the know. We would only fill the Balloons on the 9th and 10th, not beforehand. This requires transporting a tank if we end up with the full 300 balloons promised. Volunteers are needed (I have no car!)

The Plan for SFD 2005

Anyone (outside organisations included) who wishes to participate in the SFD activities in any way, please attend this week's Interface meeting (7th, more details below). If you are unable to attend, please contact me ASAP to confirm your participation.

Details of how and where this is held are available from http://interface.org.nz

I am still open to suggestions / improvements at this point, but the time-frame is closing quickly. Anyone who thinks some they can arrange a seminar-like talk thing organised in time that would also be cool; currently no one has come forward to arrange this, so it's not happening.

Anyone who thinks their company, boss, ex., flatmate's dog may be of assistance please get in touch with me. For those who raised your hands to participate can you please get in contact with me ASAP also.

NZOSS/WellyLug Involvement

NZOSS people, I have suggested that in lieu of the traditional BNZ lunch we combine it with the Interface evening meeting on the 7th? I realise this may not be practical for some people. Please let me know if this is a good idea or should be shot now.

WellyLug has an installfest which is happening on the 24th More], We would like to promote this as part of SFD activity, as it will be good to be able to tell people where they can go for additional help and info. I also think setting up an Interface.org.nz run installfest to be run sometime after SFD would be great, and we can also promote this within the UNI.

Update: Interface is planning InstallFest200502 for the 1st of October.

Helium Tank -- Currently Downgraded

Currently we have on 25 Balloons, which hopefully I can get filled from the chemistry department at Uni. If everything turns up on Monday, we can still go ahead. Those of you who have already chipped in money, this may go towards purchasing a smaller tank/filling from a commercial vendor if I can't arrange something with the chem. dept.

---

Someone on #wellylug has a Boc gas account, from calculations and discussion I think we want an "E" type tank. We need to get this arranged ASAP. [that was jo-mangee -- he wasn't paying attention - and went on holiday. (sorry) - 2005-09-10 04:14]

We need to decide if any interface funds will be allocated towards this. Ultimately however the funding needs to come from members pockets.

We need to collect monies for this ASAP. You can provide them to any of the following people. Donald Gordon, Joel Pauling, Alex Potanin, Chris Andreae. Although Alex is probably the best person to get them to. Generally these people may be found on the Second floor of the cotton building during weekdays.

If everyone chips in $10 from the 10 people who said they wanted to help out we are halfway there. Again, this is were Wellylug members interest and NZOSS interest is helpful.

If we do not meet the target for a Full E size costing, then we can go for a smaller tank however it means that we don't get all 300 balloons filled and airborne... it's okay no biggie.

At this point I REALLY REALLY need the person who mentioned they dealt with Boc regularly to ring me ASAP. My contact details are at the bottom of this e-mail. If you know who that person is, please give me there details so I can get in contact with them.

Because we need to either get the tank delivered or arrange for someone with a car to pick it up.
