Breaking Windows

In the year 2010AD hacks happen. True story. Systems get owned with tools that offer a high rate of success and require little knowledge of whats going on behind the scenes. Security advisories are released on a daily basis and users are constantly bombarded with software asking them to update.

In the year 2010AD many have seen a shell or calc.exe pop on screen. Considerably less have seen inside a debugger while the magics happening.

The purpose of this talk is to give an insight into how to break modern Windows. I'll step through a collection of recent vulnerabilities and demonstrate how they can be leveraged to allow reliable code execution. No prior knowledge will be assumed so there will be something for everyone.

Speaker

James Burton, aka Jayji, is an employee of Insomnia Security. Having moved to Wellington earlier this year he is a fresh face on the scene. Some may recognise him for his Script Kiddie ./ prowess which saw him come out victorious in 'Skid Wars' at Kiwicon last year.
