Requirements
In order to be eligible for SWANS access you must be a current Interface/VEC member.
Access methods
PPTP
Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol RFC2637
Pros:
- Easiest to set up
- Widely supported
- Windows (95 OSR2 onwards)
- Apple Macs
- iPod/iPhone/iPad mobile devices
- Android devices
- Linux
Cons:
- Not encrypted (Linux implementation limitation)
How to access:
Configure your client with
Server address: vpn.interface.org.nz
- User name: As provided to you
- Password: As provided to you
Encryption: off
OpenVPN
OpenVPN used SSL/TLS encryption, the same as used to connect to secure websites, to create its tunnels.
Pros:
- Encrypted
Cons:
- Requires installation of 3rd-party software
- May not operate on mobile devices
How to access:
- Download and install the OpenVPN client
- For Linux use your package manager
For Windows/Mac download an installer from the OpenVPN download page
Download the Interface/VEC OpenVPN SSL/TLS certificate
- Configure OpenVPN with the following
- Device: tun
- Protocol: UDP
- Server: vpn.interface.org.nz
- Server port: 15695
- Certificate: location of where you downloaded the Interface/VEC OpenVPN certificate
- Authentication: User/Password
GRE
General Route Encapsulation RFC2784
Pros:
- Stateless 'always up' tunnel
Cons:
- Requires static address
- Requires sysadmin configuration at Interface/VEC end
- Not encrypted
- Packet fragmentation problems (local VUW problem)
How to access:
Send an email to <sysadmins AT lists DOT interface DOT org DOT nz>
vtun
Pros:
- Encrypted
- Layer 2 tunnelling (i.e. ethernet)
Cons:
- Very slow
